How it plays
The game uses a two-dimensional side-on construction view. Players select objects from an inventory, place them in the scene, adjust available settings, and start the simulation to see whether the intended reaction works.
Scenarios generally have a stated goal, such as putting a ball into a container or activating a target. Objects obey simplified physics and may interact through motion, gravity, combustion, cutting, or impact. The DOS release also includes a free-form construction mode for experimenting with devices and building custom puzzles.
Plan your run
Read the objective before placing anything, then identify the object that must move or change first.
Before you begin
Pause to study the layout before starting the simulation.
When a chain reaction fails, change one object or position at a time so the cause is clear.
The Incredible Machine is a physics-based puzzle game developed by Dynamix and published by Sierra On-Line for DOS. Each scenario asks the player to arrange ordinary objects and unusual machines so that a specified chain reaction completes a simple objective. Its play style combines experimentation, spatial reasoning, and careful timing rather than direct character control. The game became well known for turning familiar items such as balls, ropes, scissors, fans, cats, and explosives into puzzle components. Its approachable presentation and open-ended construction tools helped it receive a strong historical reputation, and it became the foundation of a long-running puzzle series.
