Armakuni
The last surviving ninja and the player character. He journeys through Japan to oppose Kunitoki.
How it plays
The game uses an isometric perspective. Armakuni moves through outdoor and indoor areas, searches for objects, solves environmental puzzles, and fights guards and other enemies with ninja weapons and techniques.
Progression follows a sequence of large stages. Items found in one area may be needed later, while hazards, enemies, and limited opportunities for recovery make careful exploration important. The DOS version is a computer adaptation of the original game.
Plan your run
Explore each area methodically before committing to a fight. Look for objects that appear out of place and test them near environmental obstacles; important items are often required away from where they are found.
Avoid unnecessary combat when possible. Learn enemy attack patterns, keep space around Armakuni, and preserve useful weapons and health for encounters that block progress.
Meet the cast
The last surviving ninja and the player character. He journeys through Japan to oppose Kunitoki.
The warlord responsible for the destruction of Armakuni’s clan and the principal antagonist.
Before you begin
Search thoroughly before leaving an area; progression often depends on an easy-to-miss object.
Treat combat as dangerous rather than automatic, especially when facing multiple enemies.
The Last Ninja is an isometric action-adventure game developed and published by System 3 for DOS. It follows Armakuni, the last surviving ninja of his clan, as he travels through feudal Japan to confront the warlord Kunitoki. Exploration, environmental puzzles, item use, and close-range combat share equal importance. The game is divided into distinct areas with a fixed isometric viewpoint and a deliberate pace. Its atmospheric presentation and ambitious world design made it a notable computer adventure of the late 1980s, although its difficult combat and sometimes opaque puzzles received more mixed reactions.
