How it plays
The game uses a top-down, tile-based perspective. Each scenario begins with a map, a faction, and a set of objectives, usually involving base construction, resource collection, defense, and the destruction or capture of enemy positions.
Players mine gold, harvest lumber, and later collect oil to build structures and units. Human and Orc technology trees contain different buildings, spells, ships, and flying units. Campaign missions unlock in sequence, while skirmish and multiplayer modes support battles outside the story campaigns.
Plan your run
Protect workers and keep resource production active; a base that stops gathering quickly falls behind. Build enough farms or equivalent supply structures before expanding the army, and place defensive buildings where they cover important approaches.
Scout the map early to locate gold, lumber, oil, enemy expansions, and chokepoints. Mix unit types rather than sending one class into every fight, and use repair, healing, spellcasters, ships, or air units when the mission makes them available.

Editorial context
A landmark DOS real-time strategy game with clear faction identity, memorable campaigns, and satisfying base management.
The interface and pathfinding can feel dated, especially in crowded battles, but the strategic foundation remains strong.
Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness is a fantasy real-time strategy game developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment for DOS. It continues the war between the human nations of Azeroth and the invading Orc Horde, presenting separate campaigns with opposing objectives and viewpoints. Players gather resources, construct bases, research technologies, train armies, and direct units in real time. The game was widely praised for its readable interface, distinctive art, strong campaign presentation, and approachable but increasingly demanding strategy. Its DOS release became an important early success for Blizzard and helped establish Warcraft as a major strategy series.
