Fun School 2: For the Under-6s
DOSEducational
How it plays
Play takes place on a map viewed from above. Players deploy opposing forces, examine terrain and unit information, issue movement and combat orders, and resolve turns according to the scenario’s rules.
The main structure combines an editor with a play mode. A scenario can be configured before starting, then played by one or two participants, depending on the setup. Progress comes from controlling objectives, using terrain effectively, preserving units, and completing the defined victory conditions rather than from a persistent character or technology tree.
Plan your run
Begin with a small scenario and verify that both sides have practical routes to their objectives. Terrain should shape the battle rather than merely decorate the map.
Keep reserves behind the front line, inspect unit information before committing to combat, and test a custom scenario from both sides. If one side can win without meaningful opposition, revise deployment, objectives, or available forces.
Before you begin
Test custom scenarios from both sides before treating them as balanced.
Use terrain and objectives to create meaningful tactical choices.
Wargame Construction Set is a turn-based strategy and scenario-design game created by Roger Keating and published by Electronic Arts. Rather than presenting a fixed campaign, it gives players tools to build, edit, save, and play battles on a map. Units, terrain, objectives, and rules can be arranged to create historical or hypothetical engagements. The DOS version reflects the era’s keyboard-driven home-computer wargaming tradition. Its appeal lies in experimentation and replayability rather than audiovisual presentation: players can design a battle, test it from either side, and revise the scenario. The game was well regarded for making relatively sophisticated wargame construction accessible to hobbyists, and it helped establish a distinctive line of user-configurable strategy titles.
