How it plays
The game uses an overhead exploration view and menu-driven, turn-based combat. The player creates or imports a ranger party, travels across the wasteland, investigates towns and ruins, negotiates with factions, and fights hostile creatures and survivors.
Combat is organized around individual party members, with movement, attacks, equipment, skills, and item use selected during turns. Experience improves attributes and skills, while ammunition, water, weapons, armor, and medical supplies must be managed carefully. The world is divided into areas connected by overland travel, with quests and discoveries that can alter later events.
Plan your run
Build a balanced party rather than specializing every ranger in combat. Keep useful skills distributed across several characters so one casualty does not block progress.
Carry spare ammunition, medical supplies, and repair equipment. Save before entering unfamiliar settlements or major ruins, and record important passwords and clues; the game often expects the player to remember information between sessions.
Explore carefully and use dialogue and skills before resorting to combat. Some encounters can be resolved more safely through investigation, negotiation, or specialized abilities.

Wasteland is a post-apocalyptic, turn-based party role-playing game developed by Interplay Productions and published by Electronic Arts for DOS. Set in the American Southwest after a devastating nuclear war, it follows a squad of Desert Rangers investigating threats, assisting settlements, and uncovering the origins of dangerous new technology. Exploration, dialogue, resource management, and tactical combat share equal importance, while character skills allow several approaches to obstacles. Its reactive world, individual NPC personalities, and persistent consequences gave it an unusually open structure for 1988. The game was widely praised for its atmosphere, writing, and depth, and it became an important influence on later computer RPGs.
