How it plays

How does Wing Commander: Privateer play?

The game is played primarily from a first-person cockpit view. Players travel between connected star systems, dock at bases and planets, purchase equipment, accept missions, and fight hostile ships in real-time space combat.

Progression is largely open-ended. Money earned from trading, bounty hunting, escort work, and other contracts can be spent on improved weapons, shields, engines, cargo capacity, and spacecraft. Story missions gradually move the central plot forward, while optional work supports several different play styles.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Wing Commander: Privateer?

Build a financial cushion before buying expensive upgrades. Trading profitable commodities between stations can provide safer income than early combat missions.

Upgrade shields, engines, and weapons according to your preferred role, and check mission requirements before launching. Save frequently before accepting risky contracts or entering unfamiliar systems.

Use the nav map to plan routes, keep enough fuel for the return trip, and avoid carrying valuable cargo when taking missions with a high chance of combat.

Before you begin

What should you know before playing?

  1. 1

Complete low-risk missions and short trade runs early to improve the ship without exhausting your funds.

  2. 2

Read mission offers carefully; destination, payment, cargo, and faction relationships all affect risk.

  3. 3

A larger cargo hold supports trading, while stronger shields and weapons are more useful for combat-focused play.
