Fun School 2: For the Under-6s
DOSEducational
How it plays
The player views combat from a fighter cockpit and completes objectives such as destroying hostile craft, protecting friendly units, or surviving an engagement. Flight controls, targeting, shields, armor, weapons, and energy management are central to each sortie.
Academy emphasizes standalone missions and scenario construction rather than a continuous campaign. Players can select available craft and mission conditions, then improve through practice and familiarity with enemy behavior, weapon ranges, and squadron tactics.
Plan your run
Manage shields, armor, and energy rather than attacking continuously. Use distance and positioning to choose when to close for guns and when to rely on missiles.
Before you begin
Use standalone missions to practice one combat skill at a time, such as missile evasion or energy management.
Keep track of the mission objective instead of pursuing every hostile fighter.
Wing Commander Academy is a DOS space-combat simulator developed and published by ORIGIN Systems. It uses the Wing Commander setting as a framework for standalone fighter missions, letting players practice combat, configure scenarios, and engage enemy forces without following the main series’ cinematic campaign structure. The game is built around cockpit-based flight, tactical dogfights, weapons management, and mission customization. Its appeal was strongest among players who wanted repeatable combat and greater control over scenarios. Historically, it has been regarded as a useful companion to the main Wing Commander games, although its focused structure and aging presentation make it less narrative-driven than the numbered entries.
