How it plays
The player views the world from B.J.’s first-person perspective and moves through maze-like floors filled with guards, officers, attack dogs, traps, locked doors, treasure, and secret areas. The main objective is to find the exit while surviving enemies and collecting useful supplies.
Weapons include a knife, pistol, machine gun, and chaingun. Ammunition, health, armor, and treasure support survival, while colored keys open corresponding doors. Episodes are divided into numbered floors, and completing a floor advances the campaign. Some versions also include secret levels and boss encounters.
Plan your run
Search every room for secret push walls; hidden areas often contain ammunition, treasure, health, or extra lives.
Conserve ammunition by using the knife or pistol against isolated weak enemies, and switch to the machine gun or chaingun when several enemies attack together.
Listen for alerted guards, keep moving in open spaces, and use doors as temporary cover. Save before dangerous rooms and boss encounters.

Wolfenstein 3D is a first-person shooter developed by id Software and published for DOS by Apogee Software in 1992. It follows Allied agent William “B.J.” Blazkowicz as he escapes Nazi imprisonment and fights through guarded castles, bunkers, and occult strongholds during World War II. The game uses fast, grid-based maze exploration, direct weapon combat, hidden secrets, and key hunting rather than complex simulation. Its episodic shareware structure helped establish a broad audience for PC action games. Critics and players widely recognized it as a landmark release that popularized texture-mapped first-person shooting, although its simple enemy behavior and repetitive environments reflect its early design.
