How it plays
Each round displays a word-related prompt, such as a definition, spelling task, or category. The player moves through the maze and munches the word or words that correctly answer the prompt, while avoiding incorrect choices and enemy Troggles.
Rounds become more demanding as the player progresses. The core loop is consistent: read the prompt, identify the valid answer, reach it safely, and continue before losing the available chances. The game is primarily a single-player learning experience.
Plan your run
Read the prompt completely before moving toward a word. A fast route is less useful than choosing the correct answer, so pause briefly to compare definitions, spellings, or categories.
Watch the Troggles while planning a path. Keep open space between the Muncher and an enemy, and avoid entering a narrow route unless the correct word is nearby. As the vocabulary becomes less familiar, use the prompt’s exact wording rather than guessing from a word’s appearance.

Hostile creatures that patrol the maze and can catch the Muncher.
Before you begin
Prioritize correctness over speed when several word choices are close.
Keep checking the Troggles instead of looking only at the answer grid.
Use repeated rounds to learn unfamiliar vocabulary and spelling patterns.
Word Munchers is an educational word game developed and published by MECC for DOS. It presents vocabulary practice as an arcade-style maze challenge: the player guides a Muncher through a grid and eats words that satisfy the question or category shown on screen. The game combines quick movement with recognition, spelling, and reading skills. Troggles patrol the playfield and make careless choices costly, giving the lessons a simple action-game rhythm. Like other MECC classroom titles, Word Munchers was valued for making repeated practice more engaging, especially in school and home-computer settings.
