How it plays
The Geoscape presents Earth as a strategic map. The player monitors UFO activity, launches interceptors, manages bases, allocates research and manufacturing, and negotiates the organization’s finances with sponsoring nations.
Tactical missions take place on destructible maps viewed from an overhead perspective. Soldiers spend Time Units to move, aim, fire, use equipment, and interact with terrain. Missions award recoverable equipment and experience, while casualties, panic, funding changes, and research progress shape later operations.
Plan your run
Protect veteran soldiers, because experienced troops become substantially more effective than new recruits. Improve base defenses and keep interceptors supplied, but avoid exhausting the budget on too many aircraft early.
Research alien artifacts and interrogate live aliens as soon as practical. On missions, use cover, preserve Time Units for reactions, check line of sight carefully, and avoid clustering troops near explosives or doors.
Before you begin
Save before interceptions and tactical missions; outcomes and casualties can permanently affect the campaign.
Use kneeling, cover, and controlled bursts when available rather than moving every soldier as far as possible.
Build a balanced roster and train replacements before relying on a small group of veterans.
UFO: Enemy Unknown is a turn-based tactics and strategy game developed by Mythos Games and published by MicroProse. The player commands X-COM, an international organization created to investigate and stop an escalating alien invasion. Its two-layer design alternates between a strategic world map and detailed tactical missions. Players research captured technology, expand facilities, manage funding, and direct soldiers in squad combat. The game was widely praised for its depth, atmosphere, meaningful consequences, and demanding difficulty, and it became a defining title of 1990s strategy gaming.
