Fun School 2: For the Under-6s
DOSEducational
How it plays
Xenon uses a top-down vertical-scrolling perspective. The objective is to guide the spacecraft through successive stages, destroy enemy formations, avoid hazards, and survive until each stage's end encounter.
The player moves in eight directions and fires continuously or whenever needed. Destroyed enemies can release power-ups that improve the ship's weaponry. Progress depends on learning enemy patterns, maintaining a safe position, and managing the limited space around the ship. The game is primarily a single-player arcade campaign.
Plan your run
Stay near the lower portion of the playfield, where incoming enemies and projectiles are easier to read. Move horizontally in short adjustments instead of crossing the screen unnecessarily.
Collect weapon power-ups when the route is safe, but do not chase a pickup into enemy fire. Learn the timing of recurring formations and keep firing while repositioning for the next wave.
Before you begin
Prioritize enemies that fire directly at the ship.
Use small movements to avoid dense projectile patterns.
Do not sacrifice a life for a risky power-up.
Xenon is a vertically scrolling shoot 'em up developed by The Bitmap Brothers and released for DOS in 1988. The player pilots a combat spacecraft through hostile installations, destroying waves of enemies and avoiding projectiles in a fast arcade-style challenge. Its play style emphasizes immediate movement, rapid firing, and careful positioning rather than exploration or story development. The game was noted for bringing the Bitmap Brothers' distinctive visual style and polished arcade design to home computers. The DOS version is a straightforward conversion of the original game concept, with several stages, power-ups, and increasingly demanding enemy patterns. Reception was generally favorable among players seeking a challenging, traditional shooter.
