How it plays

How does Xonix play?

The playfield begins with a bordered safe area and an open interior containing moving enemies. The player moves along claimed territory, then enters the open region to draw a temporary line back to a border or completed section.

When the line closes an area, that space becomes claimed and the remaining open region shrinks. A round is cleared by reaching its required territory percentage. Touching an enemy, or allowing an enemy to hit the unfinished trail, costs a life; later stages generally increase pressure through faster or more numerous hazards.

The central decision is whether to make a short, safe capture or attempt a larger cut that exposes the player for longer.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Xonix?

Start with small captures near the border to reduce the open area without leaving a long exposed trail.

Watch enemy paths before entering open space. Prefer cuts that place the new boundary between hazards and the remaining playfield, and avoid starting a move when an enemy is already approaching the intended line.

Use the edges to reposition safely, then take larger claims only when the route and enemy timing are clear.

Before you begin

What should you know before playing?

  1. 1

Short cuts are usually safer than large cuts because the unfinished trail is vulnerable.

  2. 2

Use claimed territory as a safe route for observing enemy movement.

  3. 3

If the release uses a percentage target, prioritize reliable captures over risky attempts at clearing the entire screen.
