Fun School 2: For the Under-6s
DOSEducational
How it plays
The game uses a character-and-symbol display viewed from above. The objective is to explore dungeon levels, fight monsters, collect equipment, identify items, and improve the character through experience and better abilities.
Play proceeds one turn at a time. Dungeon layouts, encounters, treasure, and hazards are generated for each run, while deeper levels introduce stronger threats. Players may explore, rest, fight, use items, manage equipment, and retreat when a battle becomes unfavorable. A run ends when the character dies or completes the available objective.
Plan your run
Treat every unidentified item cautiously until its function is known, and keep reliable sources of healing and escape available. Avoid fighting when positioning, terrain, or supplies are unfavorable.
Explore methodically, monitor health and status effects, and retreat before resources are exhausted. Because death is permanent, survival and information gathering are usually more valuable than rushing toward deeper levels.
Before you begin
Plan an escape before engaging dangerous monsters.
Check equipment and resources regularly instead of relying on memory.
Zangband is a traditional, turn-based fantasy roguelike for DOS and a variant of Angband. It combines procedural dungeon exploration with character development, tactical combat, and a large equipment system. Players guide a single adventurer through dangerous underground levels while seeking better supplies and greater power. Death is permanent, so each decision has lasting consequences. Like other Angband-family games, it emphasizes careful reading of the display, resource management, and experimentation with unidentified items. Its historical reception is best understood within the shareware and hobbyist roguelike community, where depth and replayability were valued more than presentation.
