Fun School 2: For the Under-6s
DOSEducational
How it plays
Zone 66 uses a top-down perspective. The player directly controls a combat vehicle across open battlefields, attacks enemy forces, avoids hazards, and completes objectives assigned by the campaign. Missions are structured as individual operations rather than as a continuous side-scrolling stage.
Between operations, the player manages the wider campaign and prepares for further missions. Progress depends on completing objectives and preserving enough combat capability to continue. The combination of real-time movement, weapon use, reconnaissance, and strategic planning is central to the game.
Plan your run
Learn the layout of each battlefield before committing to an attack. Moving continuously is important, but reckless advances can expose the vehicle to concentrated enemy fire or environmental hazards.
Prioritize the mission objective instead of pursuing every enemy unit. Approach difficult encounters from safer angles, conserve resources when possible, and use the campaign layer to prepare for the next operation rather than treating each mission as an isolated score attack.
Zone 66 is a 1993 DOS action-strategy game developed by Origin Systems and published by Electronic Arts. It combines a top-down vehicular combat game with a light campaign-management layer, placing the player in command of a mobile resistance force in a near-future conflict. Missions focus on piloting an armed combat vehicle through hostile territory, destroying enemy units, and surviving dangerous environments rather than following a traditional platform or role-playing structure. The game was noted for its large scrolling battlefields and blend of direct action with strategic preparation. Its presentation and open combat spaces gave it a distinctive identity among early-1990s DOS titles, although its difficulty and occasionally unforgiving mission design limited its wider appeal. Zone 66 remains chiefly remembered as an ambitious hybrid of arcade combat and campaign strategy.
