How it plays
The game uses a first-person, text-only perspective. Each turn displays a description of the current location, and the player types commands such as examining objects, moving between areas, taking items, or using objects in specific ways.
Progression is based on solving environmental puzzles and discovering how locations and objects interact. The adventure is largely exploration-driven, with hazards, treasure, timed situations, and occasional changes to the environment. There is no separate combat system; survival and progress depend on interpreting descriptions and entering effective commands.
Plan your run
Read every room description carefully and examine unusual objects. Keep useful items, but do not assume that an object’s purpose is obvious.
Save before experimenting with dangerous locations or apparently irreversible actions. Try common command variations, including TAKE, EXAMINE, OPEN, PUT, GIVE, and USE-like constructions supported by the parser.
Meet the cast
A powerful and unpredictable magician whose presence and magic shape many of the adventure’s hazards and puzzles.
Before you begin
Map the underground areas and record one-way routes, hazards, and changing locations.
If a command fails, try a more specific noun or a synonym suggested by the room description.
Save frequently before testing a puzzle solution.
Zork II: The Wizard of Frobozz is an interactive-fiction adventure developed and published by Infocom. Set in the fantastical Great Underground Empire, it presents the player with a dangerous labyrinth, unusual landmarks, and puzzles shaped by the whimsical but often hostile Wizard of Frobozz. The game is played entirely through typed commands and descriptive text rather than graphics. Players explore, collect and manipulate objects, solve logic puzzles, and respond to unexpected events while trying to advance through the underground world. Its parser and richly written situations helped establish Infocom’s reputation for sophisticated text adventures. Zork II was well received for its atmosphere, humor, and inventive challenges, although some puzzles are notably difficult and depend on experimentation.
