How it plays
The game uses a side-scrolling perspective. Orin travels through eight stages, fighting enemies, crossing platforms, climbing ladders, and navigating hazards before confronting each area’s guardian.
Orin attacks with his sword and can jump or crouch to manage enemies and terrain. Cutrus fights alongside him and can be directed to attack targets, making positioning important. Defeating guardians yields the jewels needed to advance the story and complete the final objective.
Plan your run
Learn enemy placement before committing to an attack, especially near pits and ladders. Orin’s sword has limited reach, so approach enemies carefully and use jumps or crouching to avoid unfavorable exchanges.
Use Cutrus to pressure enemies while Orin stays out of danger. The selectable stage order allows difficult areas to be postponed, and careful health management is important because checkpoints and recovery opportunities are limited.
Meet the cast
The sword-wielding protagonist and guardian who travels through the eight regions in search of the jewels.
Orin’s trained dog companion. Cutrus attacks enemies and provides essential support during stage exploration.
Before you begin
Use short, deliberate sword attacks instead of rushing into enemy groups.
Keep Cutrus close enough to support fights, but avoid sending him into hazards without a safe route.
Remember stage layouts and guardian patterns; repeated attempts are part of the progression.
8 Eyes is an action-platform adventure game developed by Thinking Rabbit and published by Taxan for the Nintendo Entertainment System. Set in a post-apocalyptic world, it follows Orin, a sword-wielding guardian, and his trained dog Cutrus as they search for eight valuable jewels scattered across dangerous territories. The game combines side-scrolling platforming, melee combat, exploration, and light puzzle-solving. Players can tackle the main regions in a selectable order, while Cutrus provides important support during battles and certain environmental challenges. Its demanding controls and enemy encounters made it a challenging NES title. Reception has generally focused on its unusual dog-assisted mechanics, distinctive setting, and clear inspiration from contemporary action-platform games.
