How it plays
The game uses a side-view perspective. The boy explores underground areas and open rooms, searching for treasure while avoiding hazards and using Blob's transformations to reach new locations.
Jelly beans are selected and fed to Blob, with each flavor producing a different form. The player must position both characters carefully, whistle for Blob when necessary, and use the resulting objects to cross gaps, climb, dig, or escape danger. Progress depends on exploration and collecting treasure rather than a conventional linear stage sequence.
Plan your run
Learn the purpose of each jelly bean before spending it. Keep Blob close, because a transformation is useful only when the boy can safely reach or use it.
Explore methodically and watch for hazards before moving Blob. If a puzzle seems impossible, look for another route or a different transformation rather than forcing the current approach.
Meet the cast

The boy's shape-shifting alien companion. Different jelly beans make Blob transform into tools and platforms.
The tyrannical ruler whose threatened kingdom provides the game's central premise.
Before you begin
Use Blob's transformations as temporary tools, not just as attacks.
Avoid feeding beans near hazards until the boy is positioned safely.
Search thoroughly for treasure and alternate routes.
A Boy and His Blob: Trouble on Blobolonia is a puzzle-platform adventure developed by Imagineering and published by Absolute Entertainment for the Nintendo Entertainment System. The player guides a young boy and his extraterrestrial blob companion through Blobolonia, a world threatened by an evil emperor. Its central idea is the use of different jelly beans to make Blob transform into useful objects, such as ladders, holes, and trampolines. Exploration alternates with obstacle solving and treasure hunting rather than conventional combat. The game was distinctive for its unusual partnership mechanic, though contemporary reception was mixed because of imprecise movement, limited guidance, and uneven difficulty.
