How it plays
The game uses a two-dimensional side view. Higgins runs from left to right, jumps over obstacles, defeats enemies, and reaches the goal at the end of each round.
Food extends the stamina meter, while fruit and other pickups help Higgins survive. Eggs can provide weapons, a skateboard, or other useful items. The player advances through eight areas, each containing four rounds, with hazards and enemy patterns becoming more demanding over time.
A weapon lets Higgins throw axes or other projectiles, but losing a life removes the weapon. The skateboard increases speed but is harder to control around pits and obstacles.
Plan your run
Keep moving, but do not rush blindly. Learn the placement of pits, flames, and enemy attacks, and preserve a weapon when possible because projectiles make many encounters safer.
Collect food regularly so the stamina meter does not empty. Treat the skateboard as a situational advantage rather than an automatic upgrade, and use bonus items before difficult sections when their effects are most valuable.

Adventure Island is a side-scrolling action platformer developed by Hudson Soft for the Nintendo Entertainment System. It stars Master Higgins, who crosses dangerous islands to rescue Tina from the villainous Evil Witch Doctor. The game combines precise running and jumping with an arcade-style stamina system: Higgins must keep collecting food while avoiding enemies, pits, fire, and other hazards. Eight areas are divided into four rounds, creating a long sequence of short, demanding stages. Its bright presentation and immediate controls made it approachable, while strict time limits and limited lives made it notably challenging. The NES version became a well-known early Hudson platformer and established the foundation for a substantial Adventure Island series.
