How it plays
Alundra is viewed from an overhead perspective, with side-view sections used for jumping and platforming. The main objective is to explore Inoa, enter villagers’ dreams, defeat enemies, and solve puzzles that reveal the cause of the nightmare crisis.
Players attack with weapons, use magical items, jump across hazards, and collect equipment and power-ups. Dungeons are structured as interconnected rooms containing switches, movable objects, traps, minibosses, and bosses. Progress comes from story events, new weapons and tools, increased health, and abilities that open previously inaccessible areas.
Plan your run
Search every room for cracked walls, hidden passages, switches, and suspicious floor patterns. Many puzzles are solved by observing how objects interact rather than by fighting.
Upgrade health and equipment whenever possible, conserve restorative items before bosses, and learn enemy attack patterns. If a dungeon seems impossible, check whether a newly acquired item or story event has opened another route.

Editorial context
A demanding action RPG with excellent puzzles and a memorable, darker story.
Its difficult platforming and obscure solutions can be frustrating, but the atmosphere and exploration remain distinctive.
Alundra is an action-adventure RPG developed by Matrix Software for the original PlayStation. The game follows Alundra, a young dreamwalker who arrives in the village of Inoa and discovers that its residents are suffering from deadly nightmares. Exploration combines overhead combat, platforming, environmental puzzles, and dungeon solving, while the story emphasizes grief, fear, and the consequences of repressed memories. Released in Japan in 1997 and in Western markets in 1998, Alundra was widely praised for its challenging puzzles, somber narrative, detailed 2D presentation, and traditional adventure structure. Its difficulty and occasional precision-based challenges also attracted criticism, but it became a respected cult favorite among PlayStation RPG players.
