How it plays
Players guide Spike through a series of 3D stages viewed from a third-person perspective. The main objective is to locate and catch escaped monkeys while collecting Specter Coins and other items.
Gadgets such as the Time Net, Stun Club, Slingback Shooter, and Super Hoop provide different movement, combat, and capture options. Returning to earlier stages with new equipment opens optional routes and collectibles, while later areas and boss encounters increase the challenge.
Plan your run
Search each stage carefully rather than rushing to the exit. Monkeys often hide behind objects, on elevated platforms, or along side paths.

Ape Escape is a 3D platformer and action-adventure game developed by Japan Studio and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the original PlayStation. The story follows Spike, who must recapture monkeys altered by the time-traveling Specter before they disrupt history. Its defining feature is direct support for the Dual Analog controller, which gives the right stick dedicated gadget control. Players explore colorful stages, collect items, and use progressively improved equipment to reach hidden areas and capture increasingly difficult monkeys. The game was widely praised for its inventive controls, varied level design, and playful presentation, and it became an important early showcase for analog-based PlayStation gameplay.
