Raven
The player character, a mercenary pilot who accepts contracts from competing corporations.
How it plays
Missions are viewed from behind the Armored Core in a 3D environment. Objectives include destroying targets, defending locations, recovering items, escorting units, and surviving hostile forces.
Players earn credits from completed contracts and spend them on legs, generators, boosters, weapons, armor, and optional equipment. The garage is central to progression: changing the machine's weight, energy consumption, ammunition, and movement profile can determine whether a mission succeeds. Arena battles offer separate one-on-one tests against rival machines.
Plan your run
Tune the machine for the mission instead of relying on one universal build. Check weight, energy consumption, ammunition, and effective range before accepting difficult contracts.
Keep a reliable ranged weapon for airborne or distant targets, and preserve ammunition for mandatory objectives. Use the arena and easier contracts to earn credits, test parts, and learn how quickly the machine can turn, boost, and recover energy.
Meet the cast
The player character, a mercenary pilot who accepts contracts from competing corporations.
A highly skilled Raven associated with the Nine Ball unit and the game's late conflict.
A powerful Armored Core that serves as a major late-game opponent.
Before you begin
Read mission briefings carefully; optional destruction and survival requirements can affect the outcome.
Sell or replace inefficient parts when a build is overweight or drains energy too quickly.
Save credits for a balanced upgrade rather than buying weapons with overlapping roles.
Armored Core is a mecha action game developed by FromSoftware for the original PlayStation. Players control a mercenary pilot known as a Raven and operate a customizable Armored Core in a future ruled by competing corporations. Missions combine third-person shooting, movement, exploration, and equipment management, while arena battles provide additional combat challenges. The game is built around selecting parts and weapons for specific objectives rather than using one fixed machine. Its demanding controls, extensive customization, and bleak science-fiction setting established the identity of a major Japanese mecha series. Reception was mixed to positive at release, with critics and players particularly recognizing its depth and ambition.
