How it plays
The game uses a side-on perspective. Asterix advances through linear platforming stages, avoiding traps, defeating Roman soldiers and other enemies, and reaching the end of each area.
Players move, jump, attack, and collect items while exploring platforms and hazards. Stages are arranged as a sequence of themed locations, with progression leading to more demanding enemy patterns and obstacles. The main experience is a single-player campaign rather than a selection of separate competitive modes.
Plan your run
Learn the timing of enemy attacks before moving into close range, and use jumps to clear hazards rather than rushing through unfamiliar sections.
Meet the cast
The small but exceptionally strong Gaul and the game's playable hero.
Before you begin
Use short, deliberate movements around enemies and platform edges.
Explore cautiously; visible items may require a jump from a nearby platform.
Practice difficult sections instead of relying on speed.
Asterix is a side-scrolling action platformer developed and published by Infogrames for the Sega Master System in 1991. It adapts the comic-book world of the indomitable Gaul, sending Asterix through Roman camps, forests, villages, and other locations inspired by the original stories. The game focuses on running, jumping, attacking enemies, and collecting useful items rather than on complex role-playing systems. Its level-based structure gives it a straightforward 8-bit console feel, with hazards and enemies providing most of the challenge. Reception was generally favorable among fans of the license, although contemporary opinions also noted conventional platforming and uneven difficulty. It remains a recognizable European licensed title from the Master System era.
