Batman
The playable vigilante who fights criminals and confronts Gotham’s major threats.
How it plays
Batman advances through side-scrolling stages, moving across rooftops, streets, sewers, and other locations associated with Gotham City. The objective is to defeat enemies, avoid hazards, collect useful items, and reach the end-of-stage encounter.
The player can jump, attack at close range, and use Batman’s equipment when available. Progress is linear, with each completed stage leading to the next section of the film-inspired adventure. Enemy patterns, platforming hazards, and boss encounters provide the main variation.
Plan your run
Learn enemy attack timing instead of rushing into groups. Use the edge of the screen and nearby platforms to separate opponents, and preserve health for boss encounters.
Explore each section carefully for items and safe footing. Against bosses, prioritize avoiding predictable attacks and strike only during clear openings.
Meet the cast

Before you begin
Treat platforming hazards as seriously as enemies; many mistakes come from rushing jumps.
Save Batman’s ranged or special attacks for difficult enemy groups and bosses.
Batman Returns is a side-scrolling action game developed by Aspect Co., Ltd. and published by Sega for the Sega Master System in 1992. It adapts the film of the same name, placing Batman in a series of Gotham City confrontations against street criminals, the Penguin, and Catwoman. The game combines platforming with close-range combat and limited projectile attacks, using compact stages designed for short, direct play sessions. Its presentation is restricted by the Master System hardware but retains the film’s dark urban setting. Reception was generally mixed: critics recognized the competent action mechanics and atmosphere, while noting repetitive combat and a demanding difficulty curve.
