How it plays
The game uses a side-scrolling perspective. Batman advances through linear stages, defeats enemies with his Batarang, avoids traps, and reaches a boss at the end of selected areas.
Batman can move, crouch, jump, and fire in several directions. Collectible power-ups improve the Batarang, while limited continues and stage checkpoints determine how much progress is retained after failure.
Plan your run
Learn enemy placement and fire ahead while approaching hazards. Keep Batman moving, but use crouching and short jumps when dealing with projectiles or low obstacles.
Save stronger Batarang upgrades for crowded sections and bosses. At bosses, prioritize pattern recognition over rapid attacks, and use checkpoints to practice difficult encounters.

Batman: Return of the Joker is a side-scrolling action platformer developed and published by Sunsoft for the Nintendo Entertainment System. Batman travels through dangerous stages to stop the Joker, using a ranged Batarang weapon as his primary means of attack. The game emphasizes precise movement, enemy pattern recognition, environmental hazards, and boss battles rather than exploration or dialogue. Its colorful graphics, aggressive soundtrack, and responsive combat made it one of the more technically polished Batman games on the NES. The difficulty is substantial, especially in later stages, but checkpoints and weapon upgrades give skilled players a clear path through the campaign. It was generally well received for its presentation and action, although critics and players often noted its demanding challenge.
