Some attacks and movement techniques depend on timing or directional input.
How it plays
Players guide a toad through a sequence of side-scrolling stages viewed from a mostly horizontal perspective. The objective is to defeat enemies, avoid hazards, and reach the end of each stage; some levels replace fighting with platforming, climbing, racing, or vehicle control.
The toads can move, jump, attack, and use environmental objects as weapons. Successful attacks can produce stronger animated strikes. In two-player mode, both players progress together, but collisions and limited lives make cooperation important. Stages introduce new hazards and increasingly strict timing rather than a conventional experience-level system.
Plan your run
Learn the timing of enemy patterns before attacking. Short, controlled movements are safer than rushing, especially on narrow platforms and in obstacle stages.
Save stronger attacks for groups or durable enemies, and watch the screen edges for hazards. In two-player mode, avoid striking your partner and coordinate movement so one player does not scroll the other into danger.
Meet the cast
A green Battletoad and one of the selectable heroes.
A green Battletoad who joins Rash in rescuing Pimple and Princess Angelica.
A large Battletoad captured by the Dark Queen at the start of the adventure.
The principal antagonist who commands the forces opposing the Battletoads.
The royal figure whose kidnapping sets the rescue mission in motion.
Before you begin
Treat the first stage as a practice area for enemy timing and attack range.
Use deliberate jumps in platforming sections; many hazards punish hurried movement.
In two-player mode, stay close enough to share progress but avoid overlapping attacks.
Battletoads is a side-scrolling action game developed by Rare and published by Tradewest for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1991. It follows the heroic toads Rash, Zitz, and Pimple as they fight the Dark Queen and her forces across varied stages. The game combines beat 'em up combat with platforming, climbing, obstacle courses, and high-speed vehicle sections. Its exaggerated animation and transforming attacks give combat a distinctive style, while its severe difficulty became one of its defining traits. Contemporary attention focused on its polished presentation and variety, although many players found its later stages exceptionally demanding.
