How it plays
The game is viewed from the side. Ladd moves through combat stages, uses his bionic arm to grab platforms or enemies, fires weapons, and avoids hazards. Because jumping is replaced by the arm, positioning and timing are central to every traversal section.
A world map links action areas, enemy outposts, communications rooms, and neutral zones. Players can explore optional routes, obtain weapon upgrades, rescue allies, and gather information before entering later stages. Boss encounters and a final assault provide the main progression gates.
Plan your run
Learn the bionic arm’s reach before attempting difficult gaps. Swing from stable surfaces, release at the correct height, and use the arm to control enemy positioning as well as movement.
Explore the map instead of rushing directly toward the next objective. Weapon upgrades, rescued allies, and information from neutral areas can make later combat sections substantially easier.
Conserve ammunition for armored enemies and bosses, and clear dangerous ledges before committing to a swing.

Bionic Commando is a side-scrolling action platformer developed and published by Capcom for the Nintendo Entertainment System. The player controls Ladd Spencer, a commando equipped with a mechanical arm instead of a conventional jump ability. His mission is to infiltrate enemy territory, rescue the captured Super Joe, and stop a dangerous military project. The game combines grappling-based traversal, shooting, exploration, and tactical encounters across a connected network of areas. Its unusual movement system gives it a distinct play style, requiring players to swing across gaps and climb through vertical spaces. It was well received historically for its inventive controls, challenging level design, and effective adaptation of the arcade concept.
