How it plays
The game uses a two-dimensional side view. Simon advances through linear stages, defeats enemies with his whip, avoids traps, collects useful items, and reaches a boss at the end of each area.
The PlayStation release includes the reconstructed Chronicles version and the original X68000-style game. Progress is stage based; success depends on learning enemy placement, preserving health, and recognizing boss attack patterns. Simon can improve his offensive range by collecting whip upgrades and can use secondary weapons when the necessary ammunition is available.
Plan your run
Treat the whip as a timing tool rather than simply attacking as fast as possible. Strike enemies from safe distances, especially when they are positioned near stairs or pits.
Learn each stage’s fixed hazards and keep hearts for the secondary weapon that best suits the upcoming boss. Avoid rushing; short pauses often reveal safer openings against flying enemies and bosses.

Castlevania Chronicles is a side-scrolling action platformer developed by Konami Computer Entertainment Tokyo for the original PlayStation. It presents a reconstructed version of the 1993 Sharp X68000 game Akumajo Dracula, alongside the original-style version, and follows Simon Belmont’s assault on Dracula’s castle. The game emphasizes deliberate movement, whip timing, enemy patterns, and demanding platforming rather than exploration or role-playing systems. Its stages combine gothic architecture, traps, monsters, and boss encounters in a largely linear campaign. The release was well regarded by dedicated Castlevania players for its faithful classic design, strong music, and substantial challenge, although its limited availability outside Japan made it less widely known than other PlayStation entries.
