How it plays
Each stage is viewed from the side and scrolls as the helicopter moves through hostile territory. The main objective is to locate prisoners, land or hover close enough to collect them, and carry them back to the designated evacuation area.
The helicopter can move vertically and horizontally, fire at threats, and must be positioned carefully around terrain and enemy attacks. Progress comes from completing successive rescue stages; mistakes can cost the helicopter or the people being rescued.
Plan your run
Approach rescue areas slowly and clear nearby threats before hovering over hostages. Keep enough room to retreat, and avoid low-altitude passes when enemy fire or terrain makes a landing unsafe.
Prioritize safe extraction over aggressive shooting. Learn the layout of each stage so the return route is not improvised under pressure.
Before you begin
Use short movements when lining up with hostages.
Destroy or avoid threats before attempting a pickup.
Plan the return path before entering a rescue area.
Choplifter II is a side-scrolling action game developed by Beam Software for the Game Boy and published by JVC Musical Industries. It continues the Choplifter formula: pilot a military helicopter into dangerous areas, rescue stranded hostages, and return them safely while avoiding or destroying enemy defenses. The game combines shooting, careful flight, and landing control rather than relying only on fast reflexes. Its compact monochrome presentation suits the handheld hardware, while separate stages provide a succession of rescue missions. Contemporary coverage generally treated it as a competent portable adaptation of the established series, with the small screen and limited controls shaping the experience.
