How it plays

How does Civilization II play?

Play takes place on a tile-based world viewed from an overhead perspective. Players found cities, improve terrain, produce units and buildings, research technologies, negotiate with rival civilizations, and fight turn-based wars. The central objective is usually to dominate the world or be the first civilization to reach and colonize Alpha Centauri.

Scenarios and customizable games provide different starting conditions, maps, opponents, and victory pressures. Civilization advances through a technology tree; new discoveries unlock units, city improvements, governments, and later scientific capabilities. Population, resources, pollution, diplomacy, and national happiness all influence long-term progress.

What is the best way to play Civilization II?

Expand carefully during the early game, placing cities near food, production, and trade resources while avoiding excessive overlap. Improve key tiles before committing to expensive buildings, and keep enough defensive units to discourage opportunistic attacks.

Research technologies that match the current situation rather than following one fixed route. Monitor corruption, happiness, and pollution as cities grow, use diplomacy to delay wars against stronger rivals, and protect trade and production centers. For a space victory, begin planning the required technology and production well before the final stages.

Check rival military strength and diplomatic attitudes before starting a war.

  3. 3

Save production and research plans for the victory condition you are pursuing.
