How it plays
Each stage is viewed from a fixed side-on perspective. Mario must reach Pauline or remove every rivet while avoiding barrels, fireballs, bouncing objects, and other hazards.
The game contains four stage types: girders, conveyor belts, elevators, and rivets. After the fourth stage, the sequence repeats at a higher difficulty. Mario can walk, climb ladders, jump, and collect bonus items for points.
Plan your run
Learn the timing of each hazard before committing to a jump. Barrels can often be avoided by changing elevation rather than jumping directly over them.
On rivet stages, remove lower rivets first when possible, then use the cleared paths to reach the remaining ones. Collect bonus items only when they do not compromise a safe route.
Meet the cast
The player character, who climbs the construction site and attempts to rescue Pauline.
The giant ape who captures Pauline and creates the stage hazards.
The damsel held by Donkey Kong at the top of each stage.
Before you begin
Use ladders to change elevation and avoid hazards instead of relying only on jumps.
Watch barrel trajectories before moving under or over them.
Prioritize safe routes over bonus items when the timer is low.
Classic NES Series: Donkey Kong is a Game Boy Advance version of Nintendo’s 1981 arcade platform game, developed by Nintendo R&D1 and published by Nintendo. The player controls Mario as he climbs construction sites to rescue Pauline from Donkey Kong. Its play style centers on compact single-screen stages, precise jumping, ladder use, and avoiding moving hazards. The release preserves the original NES presentation rather than expanding the game with new content. Donkey Kong is historically regarded as an important early platform game and a foundational Nintendo title, while this portable version was received as a faithful way to play the classic on modern handheld hardware.
