How it plays

How does Classic NES Series: Donkey Kong play?

Each stage is viewed from a fixed side-on perspective. Mario must reach Pauline or remove every rivet while avoiding barrels, fireballs, bouncing objects, and other hazards.

The game contains four stage types: girders, conveyor belts, elevators, and rivets. After the fourth stage, the sequence repeats at a higher difficulty. Mario can walk, climb ladders, jump, and collect bonus items for points.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Classic NES Series: Donkey Kong?

Learn the timing of each hazard before committing to a jump. Barrels can often be avoided by changing elevation rather than jumping directly over them.

On rivet stages, remove lower rivets first when possible, then use the cleared paths to reach the remaining ones. Collect bonus items only when they do not compromise a safe route.
