How it plays
Players move through a linear sequence of stages, firing at soldiers, creatures, turrets, and environmental targets while avoiding projectiles and hazards. The D-pad handles movement and aiming, while the action buttons jump and fire.
Most stages scroll horizontally, but some use overhead or pseudo-3D perspectives. Weapon capsules upgrade the player's shot, and losing a life normally removes the current power-up. Each stage ends with a large boss, and the final areas lead to the Red Falcon headquarters and the campaign's concluding battles.
Plan your run
Learn enemy spawn points and move continuously rather than standing in open ground. Preserve spread or rapid-fire weapons whenever possible, because they make crowded sections and bosses much safer.
In two-player mode, coordinate movement and avoid crossing into each other's firing lanes. During boss fights, prioritize exposed targets, use safe platforms, and treat every life as a chance to learn the attack pattern.

Editorial context
A landmark NES run-and-gun game remembered for precise controls, intense difficulty, and excellent two-player cooperation.
Contra is a run-and-gun action game developed and published by Konami for the Nintendo Entertainment System. Players control elite soldiers sent to stop the Red Falcon organization and its alien forces, advancing through heavily defended environments with rapid shooting, jumping, and evasive movement. The game combines horizontal side-scrolling stages with overhead and pseudo-3D sections, creating a varied campaign for one or two players. Its demanding enemy patterns, limited lives, and fast pace made it a notable NES challenge. Contra was widely praised for responsive controls, memorable weapon power-ups, and especially its cooperative play, which helped establish the series as a defining console action franchise.
