Ray Poward
A selectable Contra soldier who fights the alien forces during the campaign.
How it plays
The game uses a third-person 3D perspective. The objective is to advance through combat areas, destroy waves of alien and military enemies, collect weapon power-ups, and defeat stage bosses.
Stages are divided into connected sections rather than traditional 2D scrolling courses. Players move around arenas, aim at enemies, dodge projectiles, and manage limited lives and continues. The single-player campaign supports two selectable characters, while a cooperative two-player mode is available on the same console.
Plan your run
Keep moving around open areas instead of standing in one position, since enemies can attack from several directions.
Prioritize weapon power-ups and learn boss attack patterns. In two-player mode, spread out enough to avoid overlapping attacks while staying close enough to revive or support the other player when possible.
Meet the cast
A selectable Contra soldier who fights the alien forces during the campaign.
A selectable soldier and the second playable character in the campaign.
Before you begin
Use the open arenas to circle enemies and avoid concentrated fire.
Save powerful weapons for bosses or dense enemy groups.
Expect the camera and aiming to require more adjustment than in 2D Contra games.
Contra: Legacy of War is a 3D action shooter developed by Appaloosa Interactive and published by Konami for the original PlayStation. It follows the Contra tradition of sending heavily armed soldiers against an alien threat, but replaces the earlier games’ side-scrolling format with open arenas and a behind-the-character viewpoint. Players choose between Ray Poward and Tasha, fight through hostile environments, collect weapons, and defeat large bosses. The game was notable historically as the series’ first major 3D experiment, but its controls, camera, and technical presentation received mixed reviews. It remains an unusual early PlayStation entry for players interested in the evolution of Contra.
