How it plays
The player explores File Island from a third-person perspective and recruits Digimon by completing quests, winning battles, or meeting other conditions. Recruited residents expand File City and unlock new services, areas, and story events.
The partner acts semi-autonomously in battle. The player gives commands, uses items, and manages positioning while the partner spends MP on techniques. Training improves statistics but consumes time and can affect care mistakes, evolution, lifespan, and eventual death. Progress comes from building the city, raising stronger partners, and defeating major opponents.
Plan your run
Keep the partner well fed, rested, and treated promptly when sick or injured. Care mistakes and excessive fatigue can redirect evolution, so plan training sessions around sleep and bathroom needs.
Recruit residents as soon as practical. File City services improve access to items, healing, training, and information, while story progress often depends on the city’s prosperity and the partner’s strength.

Editorial context
A distinctive Digimon RPG with unusually deep raising mechanics and a memorable island to rebuild.
The systems are rewarding, but unclear evolution requirements and frequent care demands can be frustrating.
Digimon World is a PlayStation role-playing and creature-raising game developed by BEC and published by Bandai. The player is transported to File Island, where Digimon are losing their memories and abandoning their settlements. A partner Digimon must be raised, trained, and guided through the island so that the residents can return to File City. The game mixes real-time exploration with simulation mechanics. Battles, training, feeding, discipline, and care all affect the partner’s development. Its open-ended structure was unusual among early Digimon games, although the original release received mixed international reactions because of its demanding routines, opaque mechanics, and translation issues. It has nevertheless become a notable cult title for fans of the franchise.
