Harry Callahan
The San Francisco police detective controlled by the player. He relies on hand-to-hand combat, firearms, and other equipment while pursuing criminals.
How it plays
The game uses a side-scrolling perspective. Harry advances through linear stages, fights street criminals, avoids hazards, and reaches the end of each area while managing his health and available weapons. Combat mixes physical attacks with firearms and other equipment.
Progression is stage-based rather than open-ended. Players learn enemy patterns, move between sections of each level, and conserve useful ammunition for tougher encounters. The main experience is a single-player action campaign with no known alternate multiplayer mode.
Plan your run
Move cautiously instead of rushing into groups of enemies. Use the environment and enemy spacing to avoid taking repeated contact damage, and attack opponents before they surround Harry.
Conserve limited ammunition and other equipment for dangerous enemies or crowded sections. Learn the timing of recurring enemy attacks, check the edges of the screen for threats, and prioritize survival over quickly collecting every item.

Dirty Harry is a 1990 Nintendo Entertainment System action game based on the film character created by Clint Eastwood. Developed and published by Ocean Software, it places the player in the role of San Francisco detective Harry Callahan during a series of violent investigations. The game combines side-scrolling exploration with close-quarters fighting and firearm-based combat. Harry moves through urban environments, confronts criminals, and uses a limited arsenal to survive increasingly dangerous encounters. Its premise and presentation draw directly from the film, while its design follows the compact level-based structure common to licensed NES action games. Reception has generally been mixed: the recognizable character and varied weapons are appealing, but the controls, difficulty, and sometimes awkward collision detection have also been criticized.
