How it plays
DOOM is played from a first-person perspective. The objective is to explore each level, find colored keys and switches, defeat enemies, collect weapons and ammunition, and reach the exit. Levels contain secret areas, locked doors, traps, health, armor, and other supplies.
The campaign is divided into episodes and individual maps. Progression depends on discovering routes and managing resources rather than following a visible objective marker. The player can move, turn, strafe, fire, open doors, activate switches, and use the automap to navigate. The Game Boy Advance version also includes multiplayer support through the system’s link cable.
Plan your run
Conserve ammunition by using the weakest effective weapon against ordinary enemies, while saving powerful weapons for crowded rooms and dangerous monsters.
Search walls and side passages for secret areas, armor, ammunition, and health. Memorize colored-key locations and use the automap to avoid repeatedly searching the same corridors.
Keep moving during combat. Strafing around enemies is usually safer than standing still, especially in open rooms or when facing projectile attacks.
Meet the cast
The unnamed space marine controlled by the player. He fights demonic and undead forces after a teleportation experiment opens gateways to hostile dimensions.
Before you begin
Explore every branch before leaving a level; secrets often contain essential ammunition or protection.
Use the automap to identify unexplored corridors and disconnected-looking areas.
Avoid wasting rockets and plasma ammunition on weak enemies when conventional weapons are sufficient.
DOOM for Game Boy Advance is a handheld first-person shooter developed by David A. Palmer Productions and published by Activision. It adapts the classic id Software game for Nintendo’s portable hardware, placing the player in the role of a space marine battling demons and undead creatures across military bases, laboratories, and hellish environments. The game preserves the original’s maze-like exploration, weapon collection, key hunting, and fast combat while presenting the action through a scaled-down 3D engine. Its single-player campaign includes the original episode structure and a substantial selection of weapons and enemies. Critics generally regarded it as an impressive technical achievement for the Game Boy Advance, although the small screen and limited controls make navigation less comfortable than on home systems.
