How it plays

How does DOOM play?

DOOM is played from a first-person perspective. The objective is to explore each level, find colored keys and switches, defeat enemies, collect weapons and ammunition, and reach the exit. Levels contain secret areas, locked doors, traps, health, armor, and other supplies.

The campaign is divided into episodes and individual maps. Progression depends on discovering routes and managing resources rather than following a visible objective marker. The player can move, turn, strafe, fire, open doors, activate switches, and use the automap to navigate. The Game Boy Advance version also includes multiplayer support through the system’s link cable.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play DOOM?

Conserve ammunition by using the weakest effective weapon against ordinary enemies, while saving powerful weapons for crowded rooms and dangerous monsters.

Search walls and side passages for secret areas, armor, ammunition, and health. Memorize colored-key locations and use the automap to avoid repeatedly searching the same corridors.

Keep moving during combat. Strafing around enemies is usually safer than standing still, especially in open rooms or when facing projectile attacks.

Before you begin

What should you know before playing?

  1. 1

Explore every branch before leaving a level; secrets often contain essential ammunition or protection.

  2. 2

Use the automap to identify unexplored corridors and disconnected-looking areas.

  3. 3

Avoid wasting rockets and plasma ammunition on weak enemies when conventional weapons are sufficient.
