How it plays
The game uses a third-person perspective with Lara viewed from behind. Players explore isolated tombs, ruins, caves, and settlements, searching for keys, switches, artifacts, ammunition, and routes through multi-room levels.
Lara can run, jump, climb, swim, draw weapons, and manipulate objects. Levels mix platforming with traps, enemies, and spatial puzzles. Completing a stage requires reaching its exit, while secrets reward careful exploration with extra items and resources.
The DOS release is primarily a single-player campaign. Progression comes from advancing through sequential stages and managing limited health, ammunition, and save opportunities.
Plan your run
Study each room before committing to a jump, and use Lara's alignment and grab mechanics carefully. Save before difficult platforming sequences and after obtaining important items.
Conserve ammunition by using pistols on weaker enemies when safe, and search alcoves, pools, and apparently empty side paths for supplies and secrets. Watch for movable switches, pressure plates, keys, and timed routes that often open distant areas.

Tomb Raider is a 1996 action-adventure game developed by Core Design and published by Eidos Interactive for DOS. It follows archaeologist Lara Croft as she searches ancient ruins for the Scion, an artifact connected to lost civilizations and dangerous rivals. The game combines third-person exploration, platforming, environmental puzzles, and deliberate gunplay across large, labyrinthine stages. Its distinctive acrobatic movement and atmospheric tombs helped establish Lara Croft as one of the most recognizable characters in games. Critics and players widely praised its ambitious 3D environments, exploration, and sense of scale, although the fixed camera and difficult controls could be frustrating.
