How it plays
The game uses a side-view perspective. Dough Boy moves through linear stages, avoids obstacles and enemy attacks, and reaches the end of each area while firing his weapon and jumping across gaps or hazards.
Progression is stage-based, with new sections testing timing, positioning, and reaction speed. The objective is to survive each screen or stage rather than collect equipment or build character statistics. Movement and shooting must be coordinated because enemies can occupy platforms, approach from the sides, or block the safest route.
Plan your run
Move cautiously and keep enough distance to react to approaching enemies. Fire before entering narrow areas, but avoid rushing into a new screen where an enemy or obstacle may appear immediately.
Use jumps for both navigation and evasion. Learn the timing of recurring hazards, and prioritize survival over aggressive forward movement when several threats overlap.
Meet the cast
The player-controlled infantryman who advances through enemy territory using his weapon and platforming abilities.
Before you begin
Watch the edges of the screen before moving forward.
Use short, controlled advances in areas with multiple enemies.
Practice jump timing instead of relying on continuous movement.
Dough Boy is a side-scrolling action platformer developed and published by Kemco for the Nintendo Entertainment System. The player controls a World War I–style infantryman moving through hostile territory while using a rifle against enemy soldiers and other hazards. Its play style combines straightforward platforming with shooting, jumping, and careful movement through compact stages. The game is built around repeated advances through dangerous terrain rather than exploration or character development. Dough Boy received limited attention outside Japan and is generally remembered as a simple, challenging NES action game. Its military setting, short stage structure, and deliberately unforgiving enemy placement give it a distinctive place among Kemco’s early console releases.
