How it plays

How does Dr. Mario play?

The playfield is viewed from above as a vertical bottle containing red, blue, and yellow viruses. Capsules fall from the top, and the player moves or rotates them so matching colors form horizontal or vertical groups of four or more.

The objective is to remove every virus. Players can choose virus level, capsule speed, and music, then progress by clearing increasingly crowded bottles. The game includes one-player play and a two-player mode in which each player clears a separate bottle.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Dr. Mario?

Plan around the fixed viruses instead of dropping capsules immediately. Build safe columns and avoid trapping a capsule color where it cannot connect with the matching virus.

Use the slower speed while learning layouts, then practice rotations and controlled soft drops at higher speeds. In two-player games, prioritize quick clears and combinations that send additional capsules to the opponent.

Before you begin

What should you know before playing?

  1. 1

Clear viruses from the bottom and center first when possible; unstable upper pieces can then be used more effectively.

  2. 2

Leave room to rotate capsules before they reach narrow gaps.

  3. 3

In two-player mode, fast four-segment clears can create pressure even without elaborate chains.
