How it plays
The game uses a top-down perspective for towns, fields, caves, and ruins. Players speak with townspeople, search containers, solve environmental problems, purchase equipment, and travel between locations. Random encounters begin turn-based battles against monsters.
The hero commands a party by selecting attacks, spells, skills, items, or defensive actions. Monsters can join after battles and fill specialized roles. The story advances through major life stages, with equipment, abilities, companions, and available areas expanding as the hero grows older.
Plan your run
Keep several monster allies available because different recruits offer different spell lists, resistances, and equipment options. Replace outdated weapons and armor regularly, and use buffs, debuffs, and status spells instead of relying only on physical attacks.
Explore each new town thoroughly before moving on. Save money for key equipment, keep healing items distributed across the party, and pay attention to story events that affect party availability and marriage choices.

Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride is a traditional Japanese role-playing game developed by ArtePiazza and published by Square Enix for Nintendo DS. It follows an unnamed hero from childhood into adulthood as he searches for his missing mother, confronts the legacy of his father, and builds a family of his own. The game combines turn-based party combat, exploration, dungeon crawling, and monster recruitment. Its family-focused narrative and generational structure were widely praised, while the DS remake was noted for its polished presentation, added party dialogue, and approachable interface. It remains one of the most story-driven entries in the Dragon Quest series.
