How it plays
The game uses a top-down perspective for exploration and menu-based, active-time battles. Players travel across an overworld, visit towns, search dungeons, speak with characters, and solve straightforward environmental puzzles.
Cecil and his companions fight monsters in random encounters. The party can attack, use abilities, cast spells, defend, use items, or change formation. Characters join and leave as the story advances, while experience levels, equipment, magic, and job-like abilities determine progression.
The Advance version includes additional party options and a post-game dungeon that expands the endgame.
Plan your run
Build a balanced party around healing, physical damage, and magic rather than relying on one character.
Keep multiple equipment sets and healing items available before major dungeons. Save often, especially before bosses, because several story battles change the party composition.
Exploit elemental weaknesses when they are known, and use defensive buffs or status protection against difficult bosses.
Meet the cast
A former Dark Knight of Baron who becomes a Paladin and the central protagonist.
A Dragoon and Cecil’s longtime friend whose loyalties are repeatedly tested.
A White Mage and Archer who is closely connected to Cecil.

Before you begin

The late-game optional content is substantially harder than the main story.
Final Fantasy IV Advance is a Japanese role-playing game developed by Matrix Software and published by Square Enix for the Game Boy Advance. It follows Cecil Harvey, a conflicted dark knight whose service to Baron leads him into a struggle involving crystals, kingdoms, and an ancient threat. The game combines menu-based turn combat, exploration, towns, dungeons, and a large story-driven party of heroes. This version is based on the later PlayStation remake and adds playable characters, new endgame content, and other adjustments. It was generally well received for bringing a substantial classic RPG to a portable system, although its difficulty and occasional translation issues remained points of discussion.
