How it plays
The game uses a top-down perspective. The hero travels through fields, caves, forests, towns, and fortresses while finding keys, solving environmental puzzles, defeating enemies, and advancing the story.
Weapons provide close-range attacks, while magic and consumable items support exploration and combat. New weapons and armor expand the hero's options, and bosses guard major areas. The adventure is primarily single-player and follows a connected progression through story locations.

Final Fantasy Adventure is an action role-playing game developed by Square for the Game Boy. Its original Japanese title, Seiken Densetsu: Final Fantasy Gaiden, reflects its early connection to the Final Fantasy brand, although its real-time combat and fantasy structure established the Mana series. The player controls a young gladiator who escapes imprisonment and sets out to protect the Mana Tree from the ambitions of the Dark Lord. Exploration, swordplay, equipment upgrades, magic, and puzzle solving share equal importance. The game was praised for bringing a substantial console-style adventure to Nintendo's handheld, though its small screen, limited inventory, and occasional difficulty are products of its era. It later became the foundation for several remakes and related Mana releases.
