How it plays
The game uses a top-down exploration perspective and turn-based battles. Players travel between locations, talk with residents, search containers, solve environmental obstacles, and fight enemies in random encounters. Battles use the Active Time Battle system: each character acts when their time gauge fills.
Progression comes from experience levels, equipment, Espers, and learned magic. Characters have individual commands, while Espers can teach spells and provide level-up stat bonuses. The story eventually opens into a less linear second half with optional areas and recruitable allies.
Plan your run
Equip Espers according to the spells and stat bonuses each character needs, rather than giving every character the same setup. Check new shops and treasure chests regularly, and keep a reserve of status-curing items.
In the second half, explore widely before pursuing the main objective. Revisit towns, search for allies, and use the airship to locate optional dungeons and powerful equipment. Sabin's Blitz commands and Edgar's Tools are especially useful for conserving MP.
