Thor
The Warrior, a durable melee fighter who uses powerful close-range attacks.
How it plays
The game uses an overhead perspective. Players explore maze-like stages, defeat monsters, collect keys and treasure, activate switches, and reach the exit before being overwhelmed.
Four character classes provide different attack ranges, speed, durability, and magic. Experience raises character level, while gold and equipment improve combat performance. The campaign progresses through several themed realms, with optional paths, secret areas, and boss battles. Cooperative multiplayer is a central mode, although the PlayStation version requires compatible multitap hardware for more than two players.
Plan your run
Preserve food and potions for dangerous encounters rather than spending them immediately. Use the level layout to separate groups of enemies, and prioritize generators, summoners, and ranged attackers before ordinary monsters.
Collect keys and gold carefully, explore dead ends for equipment and secret areas, and match each class to its strengths. In multiplayer, divide exploration duties while keeping weaker characters away from encirclement.
Meet the cast
The Warrior, a durable melee fighter who uses powerful close-range attacks.
The Valkyrie, a balanced fighter with strong defense and a shield.
The Wizard, a fragile character who relies on ranged magic and powerful spells.
The Archer, a fast ranged attacker who fires arrows from a distance.
Before you begin
Destroy enemy generators quickly; they can create more danger than the monsters already on screen.
Use character-specific magic against large groups or bosses instead of wasting it on isolated enemies.
Gauntlet Legends is a fantasy action dungeon crawler developed by Midway Games for the PlayStation. It follows the cooperative arcade tradition of Gauntlet, placing up to four heroes in monster-filled stages where they fight, collect food and treasure, and search for exits. The PlayStation version adapts the arcade game for home play while retaining its class-based combat and overhead perspective. Players choose from Warrior, Valkyrie, Wizard, or Archer and improve their hero through experience, gold, weapons, armor, and magical items. The campaign is divided into themed realms with branching routes and boss encounters. Reception generally praised its accessible four-player action and replay value, while some reviews criticized the repetitive combat and technical limitations of the console conversion.
