How it plays
The game alternates between side-scrolling stages, overhead areas, underwater sections, and first-person shooting encounters. Duke Togo travels through hostile locations, avoids hazards, defeats enemies, and searches for the route to each objective.
The main mission is divided into connected episodes with different environments and challenges. Players use firearms, movement, jumping, and careful positioning to survive. Passwords allow progress to be resumed after a game over or later session.
Plan your run
Learn the layout of each area before rushing forward, because enemies and hazards can punish repeated blind movement.
Conserve health where possible, use cover and positioning during shooting scenes, and record passwords after progressing. The different viewpoints require different pacing: side-scrolling sections reward cautious movement, while first-person encounters demand quick, accurate shooting.

Golgo 13: Top Secret Episode is an action-adventure game developed and published by Vic Tokai for the Nintendo Entertainment System. It adapts the Golgo 13 manga and places the player in control of Duke Togo, a highly skilled contract assassin assigned to stop an international conspiracy. The game combines side-scrolling action, overhead exploration, underwater sequences, and first-person shooting scenes. Its unusual mixture of viewpoints and mature espionage themes made it one of the more distinctive licensed NES titles. Reception was mixed: critics recognized its ambition and atmosphere, but also noted uneven controls, abrupt difficulty, and confusing navigation. The result is an unconventional period action game rather than a straightforward run-and-gun shooter.
