How it plays

How does Gradius II play?

The player pilots a fighter from a side-view perspective through a sequence of horizontally scrolling stages. Each stage combines enemy waves, environmental obstacles, a mid-stage or end-stage challenge, and a large boss encounter.

Destroying orange enemies releases power capsules. Moving the power-up cursor across the meter and pressing the power button activates the highlighted ability. Losing a life removes the ship’s accumulated upgrades, so rebuilding a useful loadout is central to progression.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Gradius II?

Build a practical loadout before activating high-level weapons. Speed Up and Missile are usually safer early choices, while Laser and Double depend on the stage and player preference.

Avoid collecting capsules faster than you can use them. Learn boss patterns, keep the ship near open space, and preserve at least one defensive option when entering difficult sections. After dying, rebuild cautiously instead of trying to recover every lost upgrade immediately.

Before you begin

What should you know before playing?

  1. 1

Use short movement adjustments rather than holding a direction near terrain.

  2. 2

Watch the power meter before collecting a capsule so the cursor stops on the intended upgrade.

  3. 3

When rebuilding after a death, prioritize Speed Up and a basic attack upgrade.
