How it plays

How does Grand Theft Auto play?

The game uses a top-down, multi-directional viewpoint. Players explore Liberty City, San Andreas, and Vice City while completing jobs for criminal employers and earning points.

Missions include vehicle theft, deliveries, assassinations, escapes, and destruction. Players can steal cars, use weapons, evade police, visit pay phones, and change vehicles when necessary. Each city is divided into districts and progresses through increasingly demanding missions; reaching the required score unlocks the next city.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Grand Theft Auto?

Learn the road layout before accepting difficult jobs, and keep a fast, durable vehicle nearby. Police attention can make a mission much harder, so avoid unnecessary collisions and switch vehicles when your current car is damaged.

Save powerful weapons and safe escape routes for missions that require pursuit or destruction. Completing jobs for different employers helps build the score needed to advance, but exploration can also reveal useful vehicles, weapons, and shortcuts.
