How it plays

How does Guilty Gear play?

Matches are viewed from a side-on 2D perspective. The objective is to defeat the opponent by reducing their life gauge before the timer expires. Players move, jump, crouch, block, throw, use four attack strengths, and perform character-specific special moves.

The main structure is Arcade mode, where the selected fighter progresses through a sequence of opponents and a final encounter. Each character has different reach, speed, projectiles, mobility, and attack properties. The Tension gauge supports powerful Overdrive techniques, while bursts and other advanced systems are less developed than in later Guilty Gear games.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Guilty Gear?

Learn the normal attacks and special-move inputs for one character before trying to use the whole roster. Pay attention to spacing: Axl and Testament can control distance, while Potemkin and Kliff must exploit their reach and damage.

Use blocking and movement rather than attacking continuously. Save Tension for a reliable Overdrive opportunity, and practice anti-air attacks because jumping is common in the close-range battles. Arcade opponents can be inconsistent, so repeat difficult matches to learn their patterns.

Before you begin

What should you know before playing?

  1. 1

Start with Sol or Ky to learn the basic movement and attack system.

  2. 2

Use training or repeated Arcade play to practice special moves and Overdrives.

  3. 3

Do not assume a large character is slow in every situation; spacing and throw range are especially important for Potemkin and Kliff.
