How it plays

How does Gumshoe play?

Gumshoe uses a side-view perspective with automatic forward movement. The objective is to guide Mr. Stevenson through five stages, defeat enemies, avoid hazards, and collect the diamonds needed to rescue Jennifer.

The NES Zapper is used to shoot targets on screen. Shooting balloons can alter the character's jump or movement, while beneficial objects may provide support during a stage. Players progress by surviving each scrolling course rather than freely exploring it.

A limited supply of lives and the constant movement make timing important. The game is primarily a single-player arcade challenge and does not provide a substantial character-upgrade or equipment system.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Gumshoe?

Aim ahead of the scrolling action so targets can be hit before they become dangerous.

  • Prioritize enemies and hazards that can damage Stevenson, but shoot useful balloons and objects when they improve his movement.
  • Watch the edges of the screen; automatic scrolling can reveal threats with little reaction time.
  • Learn the timing of each stage through repeated attempts, conserving lives for later sections.
  • Keep the Zapper calibrated and play with suitable lighting for more reliable shots.
